Sisters Laila (age 8) and Aliya (age 6) are the inspiration of the Pretty Brown Girl Movement.

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- Saturday February 23, 2013 is International Pretty Brown Girl Day. Established by the Pretty Brown Girl (PBG) Foundation, this is a day to empower, inspire and encourage girls of color to love the skin they're in. The mission statement of the organization is to encourage girls to celebrate the beautiful shades of brown all over the world; while inspiring positive self-esteem and confidence. The call to action is for organizations, schools, churches and community leaders to host celebrations on International Pretty Brown Girl Day.

"It is significant that we uplift girls and encourage them to remember that they are beautiful inside and out,” says Sheri Crawley, founder of the organization. "Girls of color will have a social platform to address, discuss and celebrate the very important topic of loving the skin they're in."

On this special day the organization will also begin membership registration for the first ever Pretty Brown Girl Club. Parents, schools, churches or organizations can start official PBG Clubs which will allow a fun way for girls to engage in meaningful dialogue and activity and will:

* Celebrate the beautiful shades of brown skin
* Encourage girls to “Dream Big” and achieve their goals
* Develop a well-rounded worldview as it relates to others
* Build positive self-esteem
* Serve the community and build confidence

Events will include everything from Pretty Brown Girl small gatherings, luncheons or teas to community events and service projects. Pretty Brown Girl celebrations, ranging in size from small gatherings to large venues, will take place throughout the day.
