Former High School Principal Baruti Kafele

Jersey City, NJ (BlackNews.com) - Renowned New Jersey principal turned national / international consultant, Principal Baruti Kafele has developed a comprehensive program to motivate and empower at-risk Black male learners for excellence. Fed up with the current academic plight of Black male learners across the U.S., which he calls the number one crisis and challenge in education today, Principal Kafele resigned from his principalship at the award-winning Newark Tech HS in Newark, NJ to travel the U.S. showing educators how to launch and sustain this program in their schools and districts.

The program is called the Young Men's Empowerment Program. It is not an after school program, which he says will not guarantee 100% participation, but instead takes place during the school day without compromising the school's instructional program. It is comprised of the following strands:

* All male empowerment assemblies / meetings with Black male guest speakers (POWER MONDAYS)
* All male empowerment classroom meetings with Black male guest speakers
* Small group sessions led by Black men
* One-to-one mentoring with Black male mentors
* Opportunities to meet and spend time with Black male college students
* Opportunities to meet and spend time with successful Black men in their work environment
* Opportunities to meet and spend time with Black men in political leadership
* Dress for Success Days
* Male retreats
* Father - son programs
* Male study groups
* Rites of Passage Programs

As the principal of Newark Tech H. S. in Newark, NJ from 2005 - 2011, this program was an inherent part of the overall climate, culture and success of the school. Newark Tech is an urban high school comprised of a 90% free and reduced lunch student population that had never met state benchmarks on state standardized assessments prior to Principal Kafele's arrival. After his arrival, it went on to receive national attention and recognition by U.S. News and World Report Magazine as one of America's best high schools. Principal Kafele attributes a tremendous amount of the school's success to the Young Men's Empowerment Program and the Young Women's Empowerment Program.

Although the focus of the program is Black males, in integrated schools, they are not the only ones who benefit from it. In a conscious effort not to stigmatize a school's Black male learners, all of the male students participate because all can benefit from the program. Consequently, there are now Young Men's Empowerment Programs in schools across the U.S.

Principal Kafele is also the author of five books, including his national best seller, Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life.
